Newfoundland

Dieselization began on the Newfoundland Railway in August 1948. In 1949 Newfoundland became Canada's 10th province and CN reluctantly took over the operation of the Railway. An economic boom followed confederation and with no all weather road across the island the ex Newfoundland Railway steam engines were hard pressed to keep up. Management decided to dieselize the island railway which was 42 inch narrow gauge. From north american builders only GMD bid on the job and the Island was dieselized with 3 models between 1952 and 1957.CN created Terra Transport in 1979 to assume operation of the railway on Newfoundland and in 1988 shut down the railway.
