The GP9RMs were Remanufactured at CN’s Pointe St. Charles shops between 1984 and 1991 using retired GP9 locomotives as a base. The GP9RMs received a new cab and had their short hoods chopped to a create a low-nose configuration. New features in the cab to enhance crew comfort included improved insulation, new seats, and a refrigerator and hot plate. Other cab improvements included electronic speedometers, event recorders and a new AAR control stand. The front cab wall was angled forward in a shallow “V” allowing an interior step down into the nose where a tool crib, chemical toilet and washing facility were located.
The original 16 cylinder 567C engine was upgraded with 645C cylinder assemblies resulting in an increase in horsepower to 1,800. The D-12 main generator was upgraded with a rewound D-32 armature and the D37 traction motors were replaced with the D77 model. Air brakes to upgraded to 26L specifications.
