The CN GP40s have B-B four-wheel trucks and produce 3000 horsepower. Most are geared for 65 miles (105 kilometres) per hour.
The CN GP40 family is in two main groups:
- the original GP40s: These are narrow nose units built in 1966-67.
- the GP40-2s: These are wide nose units built in 1973-75.
