Grand Trunk Western GP38-2 No. 5700, operating solo, leads train #253 past the station in Durand MI on August 20 1988. #253 is operating on the Flint Subdivision and is about to cross the Holly Subdivision. Train #253 was a SCAT train (Short Crew Auto Train), where were intended to compete for auto parts traffic.
Durand Union Station was completed in 1903 and originally served the Grand Trunk Western and Ann Arbor Railroads. The City of Durand purchased to building in 1979 to prevent its demolition. It is listed as a Michigan Historic Site and is U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
