CN GP40-2W 9424 leads four more GP40-2Ws on the head end of train #730. Train #730 brought iron ore on a daily basis from the Adams and Sherman mines north of North Bay, Ontario on the Ontario Northland Railway to DOFASCO’s steel mill in Hamilton. The trains stopped running after the mines were closed in 1990.

These trains operated with a variety of motive power combinations and for a time five GP40-2Ws was the preferred combination.

The train is on the bridge over the Desjardin Canal. The train is approaching the Stuart Street yard in Hamilton, Hamilton’s downtown skyline is in the background.
