McLennan was a terminal on the Northern Alberta Railways (NAR) until 1981 when CN purchased Canadian Pacific’s 50% interest in the NAR and absorbed its assets and operations. NAR’s motive power was renumbered, the four SD38-2s going from the 400 series to the 5700 series. Then they were renumbered NAR markings were painted over. As seen on No. 5702 a small CN symbol was generally added on the cab. Initially the names that NAR had added to their locomotives were left on the side of the cabs. These locomotives were eventually painted in the CN “stripes” paint scheme, as seen on No. 5700 behind No. 5701.
